Everything You Need to Know About Online Therapy Intensives

Online therapy intensives are designed for people who want focused, personalized care without spending months waiting to make meaningful progress. Each one is structured to fit your needs, giving us uninterrupted time to focus deeply on your goals. Every intensive is thoughtfully structured to help you make the most of our time together. It includes preparation before we meet, focused therapeutic work, and follow-up to help you integrate what you've learned.

Each Online Intensive Experience follows this three-part model:

  1. Intensive Prep: Introduce the Intensive Experience Workbook, clarify your goals, and create a plan together
  2. Intensive session: Dedicated time for deep therapeutic work based on your goals and the plan we created.
  3. Post-Intensive Review: Consolidate gains and plan your next steps

Weekly therapy is designed to make progress over time through shorter, recurring sessions. An intensive provides extended, uninterrupted time to focus deeply on your goals without needing to stop just as you're gaining momentum.

The Online Intensive Experience follows a three-part model that separates the administrative and review steps away from the dedicated therapeutic time.

  1. The free consultation allows you to decide if you’d like to work with me, without cost or obligation. You’ll leave this consultation with answers to all your questions about scheduling, cost, and other administrative issues.
  2. The Intensive Prep offers a full 60 minutes for getting your history, helping you set goals, and teaching you how to make the most of the Intensive Experience Workbook.
  3. Based on the previous two meetings, you’ll have already chosen a one-hour or three-hour intensive where we’ll get to work on exactly what we planned.
  4. The Post-Intensive Review is another 60-minute session usually scheduled a week or two after the intensive. This gives you dedicated time to process the experience, review your progress, and decide your next steps.

Yes it can, and often at a faster pace. Have you ever been near the end of the hour and finally getting somewhere only to have to end the session? By the next week, you’ve lost momentum and struggle to get back on track. An intensive provides uninterrupted time to stay with the work instead of repeatedly stopping and restarting.

Absolutely yes. The Online Intensive Experience is just as effective with chronic pain as they are with any trauma. Chronic pain and trauma often involve overlapping nervous system processes. Emotional stress, past experiences, and ongoing pain can influence one another, which is why addressing both can be an important part of healing.  Intensives don’t offer any therapeutic interventions that are different than traditional weekly therapy. They just help in a more concentrated, focused way.

Most people who are a good fit for weekly online therapy can also benefit from an Online Intensive Experience.

Practical requirements:

  • Uninterrupted time for each appointment
  • Intensive Experience Workbook engagement
  • Reliable, secure access to the Internet
  • Private, secure location
  • Access to child or elder care during scheduled sessions

Not everyone will benefit from online therapy or therapy intensives. Here are some of the reasons why the Online Intensive Experience might not be for you.

  • No availability for the time necessary to complete the entire Online Intensive Experience
  • No reliable, secure access to the internet with audio/video capability
  • No access to a private, safe location
  • No access to child or elder care during scheduled sessions
  • Symptoms that require a higher level of care than can safely be provided through telehealth

Note:  A therapy intensive is NOT intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) for individuals recently discharged from an inpatient psychiatric unit.

Yes. The Online Intensive Experience is designed exclusively for online.

You probably already have everything you need. If you have ever used Zoom, Facetime, or other audio/visual online communication tools, you’re good to go.
  • Privacy: a well-lit room with a door you can close
  • Internet access: stable, secure
  • Device: a cell phone, tablet, laptop, or PC with 2-way sound and camera
  • Sound: noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds are optional, but sometimes helpful
  • Intensive Experience Workbook: digital or printed format is fine
  • Comfortable seating: we’re going to be online for a while
  • Snacks and drinks welcome
  • Fidget items welcome
  • Comfy blankets & pillows welcome
  • Service or emotional support animals welcome

Yes you can! When appropriate and with your written permission, I'm happy to collaborate with your existing therapist. Also, with your written permission, I can provide a similar summary of our work together at the conclusion of your Online Intensive Experience.

Most clients simply participate from home, but any private location with a secure internet connection can work as long as I'm authorized to practice where you are physically located. The beauty of online therapy is that it’s not dependent on your state of residence. You may be in any state (or country, for that matter) in which I am legally permitted to practice. Next, find a quiet, private space (a room with a closed door is ideal) with a strong, stable internet connection. Make sure it’s comfortable because you’re going to be there for a while.

The Intensive Prep helps ensure your Online Intensive Experience is designed around your goals rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. During this session, you'll receive your digital Intensive Experience Workbook, next we’ll clarify your goals, and create a plan for the intensive together. The workbook is designed to help you prepare beforehand, capture important reflections during the intensive, and continue integrating insights afterward.

The Intensive Prep is designed to prepare you for the Intensive. Here are a few other things to consider:
  1. Choose a private room where you won't be interrupted.
  2. Block off the time on your calendar.
  3. Test your camera and microphone.
  4. Have your workbook available.
  5. Gather anything that helps you stay comfortable (water, snacks, blanket, fidget items, etc.).
Don't worry about making everything perfect. We'll cover the important details during your Intensive Prep session.

Yes. Your intensive can be built specifically for your situation, and some clients choose to spread their work across multiple days. We'll discuss the format that best fits your needs during your free consultation or Intensive Prep session.

Yes. Some clients choose to schedule multiple intensives on consecutive days when it aligns with their goals and treatment plan. I'll provide my professional recommendations, and we'll decide together what makes the most sense for your situation.

I offer four types of online therapy intensives, each designed around your needs and goals.
  • Trauma Recovery – focused work for trauma, PTSD, or complex trauma.
  • Burnout Recovery – for chronic stress, overwhelm, and emotional exhaustion.
  • High Performance – for professionals seeking to overcome internal barriers and perform at their best.
  • Clinical Support – for mental health professionals
We'll decide together which format best fits your goals during your consultation or Intensive Prep session.

Because each Experience is uniquely formatted to the needs and desires of the individual, no two intensives will ever be the same. Often, clients are surprised by how much better they feel in just one session. Because the intensive is tailored to your goals, we can often move more quickly into the issues that matter most to you. My approach is gentle, validating, with a little nudge here and there as appropriate. We will slow down when you need it and speed up when you say you’re ready. You’re the driver of this experience. I’m just the navigator sitting in the passenger seat, watching for bumps in the road that could throw us off course. The next question addresses the structural timeline of an Intensive.

Each experience is unique. However there are some common threads.
  • Thanks to the Intensive Prep, we’ll jump right in to therapeutic work at the start
  • Your Intensives Experience Workbook will help guide you through the process with room to take notes and ask questions.
  • The conversation will look and feel a lot like traditional therapy, just more focused.
  • Full day sessions typically begin at 9:00 am MST (Arizona)
  • Half day sessions typically begin at either 9:00 am or 1:00 pm MST (Arizona)

Absolutely! Taking a break away from the screen is good for everyone. Your Intensive Experience Workbook offers a special section on successful breaks to get you started. Typically a 3-hour session will include one 30-minute or two 15-minute breaks based on your preference. A 6-hour session most often includes two 15-minute and one 30-minute break.
  • Break times do not take away from your therapeutic time. You will still get the full 3-hour or 6-hour session — plus time for breaks.
  • Breaks are flexible and can be adjusted based on your needs that day.

No. Therapy intensives include natural pauses, breaks, reflection time, and flexibility based on your needs. We’ll work at a pace that feels productive and sustainable.Therapy intensives also create space for interventions that don't require talking at all. Depending on your goals and preferences, we may incorporate movement, breathing exercises, expressive arts, or other experiential techniques as part of the process. There is no expectation that you'll be talking continuously for the entire session.

Once the intensive session or sessions are completed, The Post-Intensive Review is designed to help you consolidate what you've learned and decide on your next steps.Using your Intensive Experience Workbook, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on the experience and decide on your next steps. If additional focused work would be helpful, we can also discuss whether another intensive would be appropriate.

Yes. Many of my clients choose to return to their previous therapist to continue building on the progress made during their Intensive Experience.

With your written permission, I can provide a comprehensive summary of the intensive, including themes addressed, key insights, and recommendations for ongoing work, to support continuity of care with your existing therapist

Yes. I offer a free consultation before scheduling a therapy intensive. You may either schedule your consultation online or contact me directly before booking.

Every therapy intensive follows a structured three-part process designed to maximize preparation, focused treatment, and follow-up. Each intensive includes a 1-hour Intensive Prep, a 3-hour or 6-hour Intensive, and a Post-Intensive Review. After your free consultation, we’ll typically schedule the Intensive Prep session, the intensive itself, and the Post-Intensive Review together. You may also schedule online by choosing any open dates and times for all three parts or request appointments by email.

Therapy intensives are offered as a private-pay service. Payment may be made by credit card, debit card, or eligible FSA/HSA cards. If you have questions about fees or payment options, I'm happy to discuss them during your free consultation.

Eligible clients may choose to pay through CareCredit, which can provide financing options for healthcare expenses. You’re welcome to ask about payment options during your consultation.

Because I work exclusively online, clients do not need to travel to participate in therapy intensives. I provide telehealth intensives to clients who are physically located in states where I am licensed or authorized to practice at the time of the session. Your permanent residence does not necessarily determine eligibility.  Because these authorizations change frequently, you may find the most recent list at Can We Work Together via Telehealth?.
